BIAB vs gel nails: which should you choose?

TL;DR

  • Gel polish is a coloured gel that gives a glossy, chip-resistant finish on your natural nails.
  • BIAB is a thicker builder gel that adds strength, so weak or breaking nails can grow.
  • BIAB is usually infilled every three to four weeks, while gel polish is usually redone every two to three weeks.
  • At Plush Beauty Studio in Woking, gel manicures are £30, BIAB overlays are £30 and BIAB infills are £25.

BIAB nails have become one of the most requested treatments at our nail salon in Woking, and one of the most common questions we hear is whether BIAB is really different from gel. It is. Both are cured under a lamp, but they do different jobs. This guide explains what BIAB is, how it compares with gel polish and how to choose the right one for your nails.

What is BIAB?

BIAB stands for Builder in a Bottle. It is a thicker, builder-style gel brushed over your natural nails to create a strong protective layer. That extra strength stops nails from bending, peeling and snapping, which makes BIAB a popular choice if your nails keep breaking or you are trying to grow them. BIAB can be worn in a natural or sheer shade, or with colour on top.

BIAB can also be used to add a little length. At Plush, you can choose a BIAB overlay with no extension, or BIAB extensions in short, medium or long.

What is gel polish?

Gel polish is a coloured gel painted onto your natural nails and set under a lamp. It is dry as soon as you leave and lasts much longer than regular nail polish without chipping. It is thinner than BIAB, so it does not add strength or structure. It is ideal if your nails are already healthy and you simply want long-lasting colour.

How long do BIAB nails last?

BIAB nails usually look good for around three to four weeks. After that, your natural nail growth leaves a gap at the base and the balance of the nail shifts, so it is time for an infill. How long yours last depends on your nail growth, your hands and your daily routine.

What is a BIAB infill?

Instead of removing everything at each appointment, a BIAB infill files back the existing product and rebalances it, then fills the regrowth at the base. Because your nails are not stripped back every few weeks, infills help your natural nails grow longer and stronger under the product. At Plush, infills are £25 and available on our own work.

Does BIAB damage your nails?

BIAB itself is not damaging. Damage usually comes from picking or peeling the product off, or from rough removal. Let your technician remove it properly, and keep your cuticles moisturised with cuticle oil between appointments. If a nail lifts or breaks, a quick BIAB repair is available for £5.

Which should you choose?

Choose BIAB if

Your nails bend, peel or break easily, you want to grow your own nails, or you would like a little extra length without full extensions.

Choose gel polish if

Your nails are strong already and you want glossy, chip-resistant colour for a holiday, event or everyday wear.

Want real length?

If you want long nails in one appointment, Gel X extensions use soft gel tips from short to XX long.

Making your nails last

Use cuticle oil daily, wear gloves for cleaning and washing up, and avoid using your nails as tools. Book your infill on time rather than waiting until a nail lifts, as small lifts can catch and break.

  • Gel polish adds long-lasting colour but not strength.
  • BIAB is infilled every three to four weeks, so your natural nails can grow.
  • Never peel off BIAB or gel. Proper removal protects your nails.

BIAB vs gel FAQs

BIAB is a thicker builder gel that strengthens your natural nails. Gel polish is a thinner coloured gel that adds long-lasting colour but no strength.

Usually around three to four weeks before you need an infill, depending on how fast your nails grow.

If your nails are weak or keep breaking, BIAB is usually the better choice because it adds a protective layer and can be infilled rather than removed each time.

Yes. BIAB can be worn in a natural or sheer shade, or with colour and nail art on top.

Not when it is applied and removed properly. Damage usually comes from picking or peeling it off.

At Plush, infills are available on our own work. If your BIAB was done elsewhere, we can remove it and start a fresh set.

At Plush Beauty Studio, a BIAB overlay is £30, BIAB extensions are £35 to £45 and infills are £25.
